Livestream: Coronation Street Damp & Mould Storyline - EXPERTS DISCUSS

When Coronation Street - with an audience of 4m viewers watching each episode - covers damp and mould in a rental property - there's no ignoring it! On Tuesday 29 September, from 10.30am–12pm, UK Centre for Mould Safety will be hosting a live expert discussion prompted by Coronation Street’s damp and mould storyline. I’ll be joined by: Dr Abi Whitehouse – Senior Clinical Lecturer in Children’s Environmental Health and Honorary Paediatric Respiratory Consultant Paul Shamplina – Founder of Landlord Action, TV personality and private rented-sector legal expert Chris Dunnachie – Private Sector Housing Enforcement Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council Together, we’ll deconstruct the topical soap opera storyline and discuss: • How building defects, water damage, damp and mould can affect people’s health • Why children and some other occupants are particularly vulnerable • How common these situations are across UK housing • Where responsibility sits when a defective home is let • Tenants’ rights and landlords’ legal duties • The role of council Environmental Health teams • What families can do to reduce the risk of damp, mould and water damage This subject is deeply personal to me. I had a near-death experience of pneumonia after living in a water-damaged building, and my daughter now lives with irreversible health conditions after we dealt with mould in the wrong way. That experience led me to create Indoor Air Aware and UK Centre for Mould Safety to protect public health. Coronation Street deserves credit for bringing this issue into people’s living rooms. Now we need to use that attention to improve understanding, professional practice and the protection available to families. When?
